Good for you. You’ve decided to get off your couch or quit spending endless hours on Facebook. You’re taking up cycling. Maybe you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with the dazzling array of choices that confront you when it comes to purchasing a bike?
We’ve got a few suggestions to help you out. Remember, you rode a bike as a kid. There wasn’t too much complicated about it back then. You didn’t care how you looked. You just enjoyed the freedom you felt. It hasn’t changed all that much. All you really need is a bike and a helmet.
Here are a few suggestions to help you make that step into cycling as an adult:
Road bikes are generally lighter, faster and have skinnier tires. They are designed for paved roads. So if you want to commute to work, do road trips or enter some road racing events, this is the bike for you.
Hybrids are great for both dirt and paved roads. They offer a more comfortable ride because you are in a more upright position. The tires are thicker so they provide a more stable ride.
Mountain bikes have the widest tires so the ride is slower. If you’re after off-road and adventure cycling, this bike is for you.
Know Your Budget
Know how much you can spend before shopping. A good rule of thumb is that your bike will cost ⅔ of your budget and you’ll need ⅓ for accessories like a helmet, a pump, a water bottle and cages.
Get a Proper Bike Fitting
Come into the shop so that we can make sure your bike fits you. We’ll look at your riding style, flexibility, types of terrain you’ll be riding on, your body measurements and any limitations you may have. We’ll adjust your seat height, saddle position, handlebar height and reach.
Never purchase a bike before you test drive it. Do this for at least 20 minutes to make sure you get a good feel for the bike. Ask questions and have any minor adjustments made before you take it out for a spin.
Get Out There and Ride
Just get started and enjoy the sport. You’ll discover all kinds of things after some saddle time. You’ll continue to learn and discover. You just have to get out there and start spinning your legs.
