Cross is Here! And it’s probably some of the most fun you’ll ever have on a bike!
Cyclocross - “CX” or just “Cross” for short was invented in the early 1900s by the French, the Dutch or the Belgians depending on who you believe. What can be said for ‘certain’ is that is was invented by cyclists looking for a way to have as much fun as possible on road bikes in the fall and winter. Think riding around in circles on courses that likely have: mud pits, sandpits, barriers to jump, stairs to run up, and rowdy spectators heckling you in the friendliest sort of way.
We are very lucky to have one of the very best CX series in Canada right here on Vancouver Island. Cross on the Rock was started 14 years ago by Wendy Simms and Norm Thibault and a group calling themselves the Council of Cross. The first race had something like 10 participants. The Series exploded in popularity - probably because of it’s grassroots nature, accessibility and the fact it is so fun - and now most weekends from September through November there are hundreds of cyclists of all abilities and ages getting super muddy with big grins on their faces.
Sound like something you want to try? The season is already underway with the first race, Coal Cross in Cumberland, having been this past weekend. The dates for the rest of the series are:
Sept 22 - Pro City GP, Topaz Park., Victoria
Oct 6 - Cross on The Commons, Civic Park., Qualicum Beach
Oct 14 - Muc Off Cup, Bowen Park., Nanaimo
Oct 27 - Crosstoberfest (The return of), Transfer Beach., Ladysmith
Nov 3 - Day of Thunder, Western Speedway., Victoria
Nov 16 - Hot Crossed Bunnies, Beban Park., Nanaimo
